There have been so many changes and challenges lately due to the coronavirus. One challenge I have been struggling with in particular is online school.
A lot of us are so used to learning in a classroom and it can be very difficult to stay focused and actually concentrate at home. The past few weeks I have been perfecting my online school technique and have discovered some pretty helpful tips that I want to share. Hopefully, they will help you too!
1. Be Positive
I couldn’t start this post any other way, could I? Haha! I know it’s cheesy but it really is important that we stay as positive as we can.
Even though online school may be hard to adjust to, you have so many things going for you. You have the internet at your figure tips, teachers who want to help you, your family and friends.
Be thankful for what you have and try to look on the bright side of things!
2. Set Up a Work Space
It is a great idea to find a quiet area in your house that you designate for school work. Try to make it as separate from your relaxation spaces as possible. Ideally away from your bed, couch, TV and other distractions.
This will help create an environment where you are most productive. Creating a workspace of my own has kept me focused and on task. I definitely recommend creating a workspace of your own if you haven’t yet.

3. Use a Planner
Using a planner is my favorite of these 15 online school tips! If you have read any of my past posts on school hacks then you know that I am a big fan of planners! My planner helps me organize and keep track of basically my whole life.
It is very important to write down when all of your assignments are due so that you don’t miss any important dates. One thing that I have noticed with online schooling is that I am not reminded to complete upcoming assignments as much.
This is when your planner becomes your best friend because it will help remind you when important work is due!
My favorite planner is The Happy Planner. They are super cute and customizable to fit your personal style. Any planner will work though! Check out all of these really cute and inexpensive planners!
4. Establish a Routine
This is the tip that I definitely struggle the most with. My class schedule is all over the place and since I am not working right now I don’t have any reason to get up at the same time every day. However, trying to establish some sort of routine will help you stay on track.
The days that I don’t have 8 am classes I try to wake up by 9:00 or 10:00 so that I can be somewhat productive before my first class.
I have found that the best way to establish a routine is to write one down in your planner or on paper.
You can also use the daily and weekly schedule printables that I have created. I use them all the time and they are SUPER helpful. I really would be nowhere without them.
The printable below as well as a daily schedule version is a part of my scheduling printables in my free resource library.

5. Plan Ahead
Planning ahead is a really helpful way to make sure that you don’t fall behind on any important assignments. It will also help with procrastination as you will be able to break an assignment up into parts and conquer those parts accordingly.
At the beginning of every school week, I always write down what is due for each day of that week. This can be difficult if you haven’t been assigned your homework yet. However, if that’s the case then you can just write down the assignments you do know about and fill in the rest throughout the week.
I turned the list that I always use in my planner every week into this super helpful printable. It looks like this and is in my FREE resource library in the scheduling printables packet.

6. Plan Your Day
This tip is similar to creating a routine. Planning out my day always helps me manage my time a lot better! You can either do this in your planner or use this daily scheduling printable that I created in my FREE resource library.
7. Stay on Task
This is a big one! Try your hardest to stay on task. I know how easy it can be to get distracted but the only way that you will finish an assignment is if you actually focus and get it done.
I like to listen to study music when I do my work. The songs are all instrumental so it helps me focus and doesn’t distract me. These are my favorite study music albums that I listen to on Apple music.

8. Set personal goals
It is helpful to write down weekly or daily goals for yourself and try your best to complete them on time. Your goals can include completing an assignment, reading a book, taking notes, etc. Anything that is a productive use of your time.

9. Take Notes
It is super easy to zone out during an online class (trust me, I have multiple times!) I have found that the best way to stay focused is to take neat and organized notes. Lately, I have actually been taking much neater notes because I want to make sure that I have all the necessary information.
I started using a Cornell like style of note-taking and it has been working really well.
The idea behind the Cornell note method is to split your notes into two sections. On the left, you write the key terms and on the right, you write down information about those key terms. Here is an example of my history notes.
Having neat notes will also make studying and home work much easier!
10. Lessen Distractions
I don’t know about you but my house can be very distracting! Between my cozy bed, couch, TV, dog and loud family it can be really hard to get work done.
Having a designated study area and listening to study music have been the most helpful for me in lessening distractions. I definitely recommend trying these tips if you haven’t yet.
11. Speak Up and Ask For Help
If you are having trouble learning class material at home don’t hesitate to reach out to your teachers. They are there to help you and want you to succeed!
12. Take Breaks
It is so important to take breaks so that you don’t get overwhelmed. Go for a quick walk, grab a snack, listen to some music, etc. Do something that will help clear your mind.
13. Get Enough Sleep
Getting enough sleep is super important! Studies show that most teenagers need 9 and ½ hours of sleep to function best.
The best way to make sure you’re consistently getting enough sleep is to create a bedtime for yourself (during the school week) that you stick to.
You can even add your bedtime to your weekly schedule.
14. Manage Your Time
The best way to manage your time is to use a planner to plan out your day. Block out specific times that are designated for school work and stick to them! Just think about how much better you are going to feel when you finish your assignments.
15. Stay Organized
If you follow all of the tips above then you will be golden! The most important organizational tips include setting up a workspace, keeping a planner, writing down all of your assignments, setting goals and taking neat notes.
If you do all of these things then you are going to be the most organized and productive online student out there! Remember it is okay to not be perfect and these tips will take some time to perfect. Just try your best. I know you can do it!
Don’t forget to grab those FREE printables I mentioned above. They really are super helpful!
