17 Things I Regret Not Bringing With Me to College:
1. Better Mattress Topper
If you could only buy one thing for your dorm room, make sure it’s a twin XL (standard dorm bed size) mattress topper!! I promise, college dorm beds are extremely uncomfortable.
The mattress topper I brought my freshman year was okay but wasn’t as nice as the one I have on my dorm bed now. Now, I have a 4 inch memory foam mattress topper similar to the one above and my dorm bed is so cozy!

2. Bed Rest Pillow
I didn’t have one of these my freshman year of college but both of my roommates had really fuzzy Ugg ones. I got one later in the year and agree that they make it so much more comfortable to sit on your bed and do work.
3. Waterproof boots:
I completely forgot to bring waterproof boots to college which was a big mistake. It rained a lot more than I expected! This past Christmas, I got LL Bean boots which are great for rainy and snowy days.
4. Stool
If you’re planning on raising or lofting your bed, don’t forget to bring a small stool. I raised my bed and didn’t have a stool, so I literally hopped into bed every night (not going to lie, it was kind of fun) However, my roommates had mini stools, and it was a lot easier for them to get into bed!
I recommend using a storage ottoman like this because it can be used as a stool, extra storage, and seating!
5. Speaker
My roommates and I all regret not bringing a speaker because it would have been a lot of fun to play music in our room. I have this speaker and it works really well.
6. Portable Projector
If you want to be able to project movies onto your wall or ceiling to make movie nights even more fun, definitely bring a projector! My roommates and I always talked about getting one but never did.
7. Extra storage bins
It’s a great idea to bring extra storage bins to organize some of your miscellaneous items. One of my roommates kept storage bins under her bed and her belongings were always so organized!

8. Desk Drawer Organizers
I wish that I brought desk drawer organizers to college! It is so easy for drawers to quickly become junk drawers which are not ideal because then you can never find what you’re looking for.
9. Makeup Organizer
I wish that I would have brought a small makeup organizer to college! It is so nice to have organized makeup supplies and it makes it a lot easier to do makeup.
10. Drying Rack
Thankfully, one of my roommates remembered to bring a drying rack, so I was able to use hers. Most likely, you will have some clothes that you will not want to put in the dryer, which is why having a drying rack is so helpful! My roommates and I use this drying rack and it works great!
11. Fun-Tak
Honestly, I don’t know how I lived for so long without knowing about fun-tak!! If you are planning on sticking anything to your dorm room walls, definitely use fun-tak!
It is super sticky and won’t damage walls. Initially, I hung up a ton of pictures with washi tape, and they kept falling. Thankfully, my roommate let me borrow her fun-tak to hang up my photos, and they never fell again!
12. Binder and Paper Clips
For some reason, I never seemed to have enough binder clips. I like using them to hold together my decks of flashcards.
13. First-Aid Kit
Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor or healthcare professional. All over-the-counter medicines recommended below should only be taken as prescribed on the back of the bottle based on your age and condition.
It’s definitely helpful to have some basic first-aid items like band-aids, neosporin, hydrocortisone, advil, and allergy medicine.
14. Sponge Holder
If you have your own sink, make sure to bring a sponge holder for your sponge. My roommates and I completely forgot to bring something to keep our sponge in.
15. Microwavable Dishes
For some reason, I didn’t bring a set of microwavable dishes to college when I first moved in which I regret. You don’t need a lot of dishes but should bring a plate, bowl, and mug that can all be microwaved.
16. Small Padded Envelopes
I never thought of bringing these to college, but my roommate did, and I used so many of them! They are perfect for mailing small gifts to your friends and family for their birthdays.
17. Floss Picks
I think floss picks like these make it a lot easier to floss! I definitely prefer using these over regular floss and regret not bringing them to college.
