1. Make Your Move-In Easy!
Move-in can be hectic which is why it’s important to do everything you can to make it a lot easier. I know that I talked about move-in day in my last couple of emails so I won’t elaborate too much.

2. Get a Great Planner
Okay, I know what you’re probably thinking… such a basic tip! It is basic but it’s so so important!
There are going to be so many things that you have to remember in college, especially during your first week! A planner is by far the best way to organize all of your assignments, deadlines, and exams!
Make sure to grab these pens for your planner too. They don’t bleed and work really well!
If you want to make your planner even fancier (if you can’t tell I’m kind of extra lol) grab these adorable planner stickers too! I use this brand of stickers on my planner, laptop and to decorate greeting cards.
3. Decorate Your Dorm
Ahh is this not one of the best parts about going to college!? If you’re like me, you’ve probably stalked Pinterest this Summer for dorm decor inspo!
There really isn’t anything better than turning your dorm into a cozy space that feels like home.
If you’re looking for some really cute dorm room decor, definitely check out my blog post about adorable dorm decor here!!
4. Spend Time With Your Roommates
You definitely don’t have to become best friends and spend every second together but it can be helpful to try to get to know your roommates better. Maybe go to dinner, explore your new town, or go out together.
These 55 best roommate questions will definitely help you get to know each other!

5. Buy All Necessary Textbooks
Only buy textbooks for classes that you know you absolutely need. It’s the worst feeling to buy a book for a class and then find out that you don’t need it.
After your classes meet for the first time then you can decide what other textbooks to buy.
If you know anyone who’s taken your class before, it’s a great idea to ask them if you even need to buy the textbook (it could just be a total waste of money).
Make sure to save money and check Chegg and Amazon to rent/buy your books!
6. Shop For and Organize Your School Supplies
Make sure that you have all of the essential school supplies and that they are organized. Check out this post on school supplies your backpack needs.
7. Find Your Classes Beforehand
If you live on a large campus, it can be pretty tough to find your way around in the beginning.
My campus is small so I didn’t really experience this but some of my friends go to large schools and it takes them about 20 minutes to walk to classes. If they didn’t go and find them before the first day, they would have been late to several classes during their first week.
No one wants to add to their stress during their first week or be late to class and finding your classes beforehand will prevent this. Also, try to get to your classes early on the first day so that you can sit where you want.
8. Try To Make At Least One Friend Per Class
Having at least one friend in each of your classes is a lifesaver! If you have a question about homework or the course in general it’s always good to have someone also in that class that you can reach out to.
I know it can be really hard (especially this year with masks and social distancing) to put yourself out there but try to talk to at least one person in each of your classes. It will make your classes a lot better!
9. Keep In Touch With Your Family
Leaving your family on that first day is always hard! It just is and there is really no way around it but it will get better! Try to keep in touch with your family and let them know how you are doing and adjusting to college life.
If you can, try to surround yourself with others. Everyone around you is most likely experiencing similar emotions so they understand how you feel.
Keeping in touch with your family and just hearing their voices will make you feel better!
10. Make Fun Plans For The Weekend
Try to plan something fun (that is still socially distanced) to do with your roommates or friends the first weekend you’re at school. Maybe go out to lunch, explore your new town, go to the beach, etc.
Anything that is fun and will get your mind off of how many things in your life are changing.
I know college (especially the first week) can be pretty stressful but if you plan fun things to do, it can be a really great time!
11. Go To Student Events
Colleges and Universities usually try to keep the first week full of fun events. This year a lot of these events are either virtual or socially distanced but they are still fun! These events are a great way to get to know people and have fun before classes begin.
12 Make a First Week Of College Playlist
I LOVE music! Music always improves my mood and just makes me happy. One of the best things I did during my first week of college was using music to calm my nerves. I know that it may seem silly but it really does work!
Create a new “first week of college playlist” to get you through the first week of school. Whenever you’re walking to classes or just need to calm down, listen to your playlist to feel better.
You’ll always have this playlist to look back on which is pretty cool too!
13. RELAX and have fun!
This point is important.
The first week of college is busy, emotional, and just energy-consuming. Make sure that you allow yourself some time to relax.
Give yourself a break and take a nap, listen to music, watch a movie, and/or spend time with your roommates/friends.
Most importantly, have fun! Freshman year flies by so make sure to enjoy every second of it. You are going to do amazing in college!
