Organization is key in college! No matter the size of your room organizing your belongings is the best way to use your space.

I lived in a quad (with three roommates) during my freshman year and literally had a small corner of the room to myself. After a lot of trial and error, I learned how to use the limited space to my advantage through organization.

These 10 smart dorm room organization ideas will help you make sure that your room is as organized as possible.

10 Dorm Room Organization Ideas

1. Under The Bed Storage:

Under the bed storage is one of the best ways to organize your belongings and maximize your space in college!

If you can, raise or loft your bed so that you have a lot more under the bed storage. I raised my bed freshman year and was able to fit the wooden dresser my school provided me with, an extra plastic drawer unit, a snack bin, my hamper, and a couple of other random items under my bed.

This extra storage unit was super helpful during my freshman year! I like this one even better because it isn’t see-through and doesn’t have wheels like mine did so it won’t move around.

If you’re using the extra storage unit above for miscellaneous items, find containers to fit in the drawers so that your belongings are even more organized.

2. Drawers Organizers:

Drawer organizers are the best way to prevent junk drawers from happening. They sell organizers for dressers and desk drawers so that all of your belongings have a place.

3. Extra Storage Containers:

I regret not bringing more storage containers to college because they really help to organize your things. My roommate had some underneath her bed and her belongings were super organized.

These storage bins are really cute and come with a lid so that you can stack them on top of each other.

4. Desk Organizer:

The best way to keep your desk organized is to keep your desk as clutter-free as possible. Too many decorations will just get in your way and make it harder to do work at your desk.

A desktop organizer like this one is the perfect way to organize important things on your desk and won’t take up a ton of room. My roommate used a desk organizer like this one and her desk was always really organized.

5. Pen Desk Organizer:

Bring a container of some sort to organize your pencils, pens, markers, etc. This marble and gold pen desk organizer is so cute!

If you’re looking for good pens to bring to college, these pens are my favorite and don’t bleed through paper so they are perfect for writing in your planner!

6. Storage Furniture:

Use storage furniture for extra organization. I really like storage ottomans because they provide extra seating and storage, the perfect combination! They can also be used as a stool which you’ll need if you’re raising or lofting your bed.

7. Storage For Snacks/Food Supplies:

During my freshman year, I used a bin like this one to store my food in, but it was not big enough. My roommates and I ended up keeping extra snacks and food supplies (napkins, plastic utensils, plates, etc.) on an extra desk in our room.

A rolling cart like this one would be a smart place for you and your roommate to keep your snacks and food supplies.

8. Jewelry Organizer:

During my freshman year, I used a jewelry organizer like the first picture and kept it in one of my desk drawers. It worked very well for me and kept my jewelry organized.

The hanging jewelry organizer (fourth picture) may be better if you have a lot of jewelry.

9. Makeup Organizer:

Because I did not have a lot of space in my room, I did not have a place to put a makeup organizer. I tried to keep my desk as empty as possible so that there was more space to do my work.

However, this makeup organizer is pretty small and should not take up a ton of room. If you don’t bring a ton of jewelry to college you may be able to fit your jewelry in this organizer as well.

If you don’t have a lot of room, you can always use a makeup bag like this one.

10. Bed Side Shelf:

If you’re planning on raising or lofting your bed, there may not be a place next to your bed to put items like your phone and water which is why this product is genius.

This shelf clips on to the side of your bed and acts as a little tray which is so cool!
