6 Genius College Move-In Day Tips:

1. Designate an area in your house to keep all college items.

I’ve been using a corner of my basement to collect all of the items I’ll be taking with me in the fall. This helps me to better visualize what I have and what I still need to buy.

This will also help you better organize everything which is super helpful!

Definitely designate an area in your house to collect all of your college things.

2. Arrive Early on College Move-In Day.

Plan your move-in day schedule so that you can move in as early as possible.

I know move-in day time slots are much more specific this year to account for covid which is good.

Plan to arrive as soon as possible so that you can start unloading everything and don’t have to worry about the stress of running behind.

Being early will allow you plenty of time to clean, move-in, and organize.

3. When Packing Your Car, Organize It Right.

Organization is super important on college move-in day, especially when it comes to packing your car.

One of the best ways to do this is to pack your car so that your cleaning supplies and bedding are on top and the first things you can unload.

Dorm rooms are usually pretty dirty on move-in day (hopefully they are much cleaner this year to account for covid) however, it’s still a good idea to quickly clean your dorm before unloading your belongings.

Bring some multipurpose spray, paper towels, and Clorox wipes in first to quickly sanitize your dorm.

4. Pack & Organize Like A Pro Before You Get To Your Dorm!

One of the biggest mistakes I made on move-in day was waiting until I got to my dorm to organize my things. This ended up wasting a lot of time and was very stressful.

It’s important to pack and organize like a pro before you even leave your house. If you are using bins to store important items, don’t wait to decide what should go in each bin. Instead, start packing and labeling them ahead of time.

Decide what clothes you want hanging in your closet before you leave your house (I know it’s difficult to know how much closet space you have but try to estimate based on the room you’re living in.)

Hang these clothes on hangers and secure about 8-10 together with a zip tie. Put a trash bag around them for protection.

Use black trash bags to pack pillows and bedding.

5. Bring Personal ID Info.

You may have to fill out some forms on move-in day. Put personal ID info like your social security number, health insurance card, driver’s license, and student identification in a convenient spot.

6. Bring Food and Be Positive!

Move-in day can be overwhelming but try to remain positive! It is most likely a day you’ll always remember.

It may be helpful to bring a small cooler full of cold drinks and snacks in case you get hungry. I remember that I almost missed lunch on move-in day because I was so invested in finishing my photo wall, haha!

About Me

I'm glad you're here!

My name is Emily and I started Positivity is Pretty six years ago when I was in college. Back then, it was the place for all things college, roommates, and dorm decor. Since then, it has grown with me into a space to reflect on life’s messy, busy, and beautiful parts while practicing real, intentional positivity. While you’ll still find pieces of college life and other popular content here, my hope is to use this space to write about apartment life, relationships, making friends in your 20s, healthy habits, and finding ways to enjoy movement. My goal is that Positivity is Pretty helps you notice the good and find calm through life’s ups and downs.
